Hi

This summer I have been working at an integrated summer playcentre as part of a team of support workers for some of the children with special needs. Some of the others in my team were using Makaton to communicate with the children. I have done some training in Makaton but did not find it very helpful, I'm wondering if anyone knows where in London I can find somewhere to learn this

Hi Abbycuk

I'd be interested to know about courses as well. I did a 'Disability Awareness' workshop a few years ago and one of the sessions involved Makaton. I have got a few handouts showing the signs, etc but as I haven't had to use it I've forgotten most of it - it was very easy to pick up at the time. The tutor said the actions are very good for all children as a re-inforcement of what we are saying.

I am located in Bromley - where are you situated?

I visited a nursery school in Hackney recently and they had lots of signs in the different 'work' areas portraying both the written word and a Makaton style sign. I would like to introduce this into my pre-school - when I find the time and resources.

PS - there are a few links on the internet if you type in Makaton. Perhaps there are courses listed.

Hi Everyone!
Been away for a week and trying to catch up! blink.gif

The Makaton signs and symbols you mentioned are from Widgit Software Limited.
They are available online from the Makaton website : www.makaton.org/resources.

I've posted up a note on four Makaton BBC TV programmes beginning on Thursday (11TH) this week - you may or may not have read it - I get a bit lost somtimes. You can check out the Makaton website for times and details. It may provide you with some useful resources.

Hiya, I think that I'm right in saying that the only way to get any info on makaton is through the makaton official website. They have details of courses etc on here. the web address is makaton.org
Also I don't know if you have ever used "writing with symbols" on a pc also known as widget, but this is brilliant for making visual aids for children such as visual timetables or plans.

hope this helps

Rachael
