Learning and Teaching using ICT: Foundation Stage

DfES

This CD-ROM has been produced by the Primary National Strategy to help early years settings make better use of ICT across the six areas of learning in the Foundation Stage.

The CD-ROM features an introductory video-clip describing the role of ICT in the lives of young children, and promoting its use in early years settings. The importance of using ICT for active learning is emphasized. Downloadable accompanying text is concise and helpful, both in terms of reviewing one's own practice, and also as a means to stimulate debate in staff meetings or curriculum development groups.

A further eleven video-clips are presented showing a range of learning experiences which encourage children's independent and guided exploration of ICT:

Each of these clips has accompanying written information detailing the areas of learning involved in the activity, the learning intentions, possible individual targets, prior learning and ICT skills, and resources. Helpful questions to use for assessment and observation purposes are included, alongside ideas for extension activities and spontaneous learning. An evaluation of the video clip itself completes the clear, concise information presented largely in bullet-point format.

A second way of accessing the information is to click on one of the six areas of learning, view the listed video-clips that have been selected as best demonstrating learning in this area, and then printing off the relevant written information, eg Communication, language and literacy: Why use ICT?

Altogether, an excellent resource that all Foundation Stage settings should have.
