Describing itself as ‘an activities handbook with a global dimension’, Growing Up Global is a delightful resource for topics about other countries and cultures. It begins with some helpful reminders about how to approach multicultural subjects with young children and how to equip a setting in a globally sensitive way. The handbook is then divided into two parts. The first contains activities based on themes, such as ‘Me and My family’, ‘The Global Garden’ and ‘Music and Games’. This is useful for adding a global slant to a wide variety of topics. The second section looks at six specific countries: Ghana, South Africa, India, China, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago. There is a useful list of background information for each one. The learning objectives included for the activities are not taken directly from the EYFS guidelines, but can easily be tailored to them. The handbook offers clear instructions and colour photographs. Projects range from making and decorating a story tent to cooking celebratory food, and all are imaginative and eco-friendly. There is an extensive book list to support topics as well as a free CD with further information. Growing Up Global is full of inspirational ideas for any early years setting wanting to achieve a more global outlook to their topic work.
