Something Special: Out and About DVD

BBC Active

Each programme starts with Justin's very catchy theme song and then all follow the same pattern starting with words linked to the topic being demonstrated through toys, words, sign, symbol, video and often song! Makaton is used throughout the episode in order to enable those with learning difficulties to take more from the programme. I have used episodes from Something Special with children in mainstream and in special education and they all love copying Justin or Mr Tumble to learn the signs.

Justin also shows us clips of children from various special schools in situations such as a 'Good Morning' session, a trip to the supermarket or a trip on a canal boat. There's also the section that every child seems to enjoy the most; Mr Tumble, the clown alter-ego of Justin. He continues the theme through some kind of comic situation. Each episode has enough changes to maintain the attention of children under 5 in mainstream and in the case of my current school, all of the primary age group.

On the DVD you have a variety of options available to you. You can watch all episodes, select a specific episode, watch the signing elements or just watch Mr Tumble. This is great if there's something more specific that you want to focus on or return to. There is also the option for subtitles which is always a useful addition.

There are several of these DVDs and they are expensive but I think they are a valuable resource, especially for any school or setting which uses Makaton signing. Children love the songs and the silly Mr Tumble and its a great way to show some of the more difficult aspects of out and about when you can't always get out and about!

Other titles are also available including a lovely one on Nursery Rhymes
