A set of 12 colour A4 photographs, together with an A1 colour poster and teachers' notes present an exciting way for young children to develop an informed view of the wider world, whilst learning to use mathematical language in a meaningful context.
The photographs can be used to encourage discussion when presenting a new topic for example, or to develop the children's visual literacy, or to reinforce a maths concept the children have become familiar with through practical activities. The teachers' notes suggest further activities for Key Stage 1 children that can be adapted for the Foundation Stage.
We use the photographs in our setting to encourage the children to communicate their thoughts and feelings through gentle questioning techniques. Simple questions such as "What can you see in this photo?", "What game are these children playing?" or "What do you think this person is saying?" can promote interesting discussions even with the youngest Foundation Stage children.
A very reasonably priced resource (£12.50); I'd recommend laminating the photos to ensure long life.
